Soaring Above the Rest- Beaumont TowerIn 1928, on the site of Old College Hall, the Beaumont tower was constructed as a gift from John W. and Alice M. Beaumont. The construction was completed a year later, in 1929.
Since College Hall collapsed into ruins, former student John W. Beaumont wanted a tribute to College Hall, which is where the idea for the tower came into play. Beaumont Tower was designed to be a monument to teaching. In a more literal sense, however, Beaumont Tower really was meant to function as a defensive structure. With the collapse of College Hall in 1918 and the burning of two adjacent dormitories, Campus Circle-- now devoid of buildings-- became vulnerable to new development. Michigan State College alumni, wanting to preserve the area as a 'sacred space,' initiated a 'Save the Circle' campaign, and John W. Beaumont presented his plan for a memorial tower. This tower, occupying the highest end of the circle, would dominate the skyline of the north campus and discourage future building in the oldest and most historical sections of the college. Beaumont Tower is the location of the State of Michigan's first Historical marker. It commemorates Old College Hall, the sight where agriculture was first taught as a science. In 2000, the marker was replaced with a new plaque. A second marker was added under the original marker, in commemoration of the restoration of the tower's clock and carillon in 1996. TimeTime will come, time will go
Time shall reap, that time has sown Time comes slowly, time goes fast Time will linger, time outlasts Time sees all, time knows best Time remembers, time never forgets Time will hide, time will reveal Time will open, time will seal Time brings hope, time brings fear Time brings distance, time draws near Time will help, time will hinder Time will shine, time turns to cinder We forget about time, yet it's all we would know In time, there is everything, and time will show - Nate Hawk |
I chose this poem because it speaks of the importance of time. The Beaumont Tower is a true symbol of withstanding the testament of time. The Beaumont Tower represents what the university used to be, while acknowledging where it is, today. Although the university has changed over time, the idea of where we started will never be forgotten, as shown by the Beaumont Tower. The concept of time is so powerful because it cannot be stopped or slowed down, it cannot be moved. I think this concept can be comparable to the strength of men. True masculinity, like time, cannot be moved or unchanged, but is a part of the identity encompassed by masculinity. Therefore, time is a masculine concept because it is unchanged and nothing can stop its motion.
